Leeds Wargames ClubText Box: Race Reports from the Championship 2008, as new races are completed further reports will appear.

Race 1 = China (Malaysia)

The start of the new season saw many changes to the grid. There was the introduction of 2 new teams, a name change for an established team and 5 new drivers.

Ferodo racing changed their name to Lasagne Rosso but kept the sponsorship deal from Ferodo. Team Skoda disbanded to be replaced by team XXXX, sponsored by Fosters and introducing 2 new drivers, Nuk E Brown and Margot L’escargot. Team Edam saw Tam Gent leave to be replaced by Van der Lynn. The other new boys to the grid are RWTY, with rookie drivers, Foo King Last and Hertz Van Rental. The 2 leading teams of last season saw no changes in either personnel or sponsorship.

The weather was overcast as the cars took to the grid with the experience of Hugh Bend helping him take the 1st pole position of the season. Though experience did not help Fook Yu Nakajima who stalled on the grid. As the cars tried to get away quickly there were many close shaves but no actual damage inflicted to any of the cars. The rookies made an encouraging start to the race and stayed within the pack. As the leaders started to build a lead the sun came out, and with this the 1st damage was inflicted with the 2 rookies of RWTY colliding with each other on the fast section of the track. Also Lasagne Rossos drivers managed to collide with each other as well due to the congestion in the 2nd corner. Skarr Lectric exited this corner in a cloud of smoke as he used up his tyres.

Michael Cobblers then started to push his way through the crowd and as he passed Hertz van Rental he caused damage and the rookie lost control coming out of the corner, causing his 1st spin of his career. As the race progressed a leading pack of 3 cars broke away and jostled for position, with the rookies, Van Der Lynn and Foo King Last, competing well with Hugh Bend. Hugh Bend then showed his experience and pulled away from the group building an unassailable lead to gain the 1st win of the season.

The 3rd rookie, Hertz Van Rental, was having trouble controlling his car and spun out again, but he managed to regain the track. As the drivers sped up and pushed for positions the sun disappeared and the heavens opened making the track very treacherous. The last 2 corners of the 2nd lap saw lots of bodywork damage, with Lucious Cameldung and Michael Cobblers losing 2 thirds of their cars. Both managed to avoid further damage and finish in 4th and 5th respectively. Rookie driver Nuk E Brown ran the reigning champion close to finish 8th .

A poor start overall for the reigning drivers champion and leading constructor from last season. Team Kamikaze blamed these events on the early start to the season as normally they would be testing. A very good start for all the rookies as they all finished and 2 of them claimed a podium place,

This years championship looks to be a lot more competitive with more teams in the mix, only time will tell if this is to be the case.

Race 2 = Melbourne Australia

Race 3 =  Portugal (Estoril)

After the torrential rain in Australia, the racers landed in Portugal, to be greeted with bright sunshine and not a cloud in the sky. Qualifying again saw the rookies do well, with Hertz Van Rental on Pole and Van der Lynn on the 2nd row. Hertz then got off to a flying start and left everyone standing, especially Fook yu Nakajima who managed to stall again (the removal of driver aids this season is having an effect with some of the drivers).

The 1st corner saw the usual bunching of the field with many near misses and a coming together of Skarr Lectric and Nuk E Brown. The 2nd and 3rd corners saw a rolling roadblock develop as cars raced 3 abreast to gain track position, this road block continues into the 4th corner. As the cars exited this corner, they all started to speed up to make up for lost time, this saw numerous puffs of smoke from overheated engines. As the cars sped along the long straight more and more smoke started pouring from the rear of Hugh Bends car until the inevitable happened and a loud bang saw the end of the race for the championship leader. Michael Cobblers engine also started to make a strange rattling noise as he pushed it to the limits, thankfully no bang occurred despite racing flat out for the 1st lap.

Lucius Cameldung in pursuit of the leading pack lost control and spun into the gravel, he then managed to stall it trying to regain the track. All he could do is watch in frustration as another rolling roadblock passed him by before he finally regained the track in last place with a large gap to make up on the rest of the field. Despite this Cameldung was the only car to pit to replace his tyres.

The 2nd lap saw Skarr Lectric take the lead and keep to win his 1st race of the season. Michael Cobblers managed to nurse his noisy engine round to finish in 2nd place and Nuk E Brown made up the last podium place. Margot L’Escargot developed serious engine problems but completed his 1st race in the points. The rookie Hertz Van Rental, pushed his engine once too often and blew up in the long straight. Lucius Cameldung managed to gain a point by catching Fook Yu Nakajima, who had engine troubles of his own. All in all this years championship looks to be the closest yet.

Overcast skies greeted the teams as they took to the track for the 2nd race of the season. All 12 cars lined up on the grid and as soon as the green lights went out the cars started to bunch up. This bunching continued as the cars headed into the 1st corner with many close shaves as cars jostled for position. All the cars escaped the 1st corner with no signs of any visible damage, this did not last as the second corner saw Wolf Ferrari and Michael Cobblers sustain damage to their body work due to minor scrapes.

The rookie, Foo King Last, took the lead and sped away into the distance despite a puff of smoke from his engine. As the race was developing into a fast one, the heavens opened causing chaos on the track. Nuke E Brown took serious body work damage from a shunt and Fook Yu Nakajima also taking minor damage as he jostled for the lead. No one wanted to dominate the race with the lead changing numerous times. The chasing pack kept the leaders in sight and as the cars entered the last corner the field bunched up again. Again this pack led a charmed life as there were numerous close shaves in the wet.

As the sun broke out all the drivers sped up trying to gain whatever advantage they could. Then the heavens opened again and this time the rain was here to stay. This race caused the 1st casualty of the race as Skarr Lectric skidded out as he left the 3rd last corner and lost grip ending up in the gravel trap. Wolf Ferrari was next to leave the race as he hit Nuk E brown, damaging Browns car in the process. With the weather and these retirements the field started to spread out with the leading pack breaking away. Hertz Van Rental lost control but managed to keep the wheels turning and regained the track.

With the rain bouncing off the track, there were numerous close shaves before the inevitable happened as Margot Lescargot and Michael Cobblers came together and both left the race as their cars disintegrated. This left the remaining cars to take it easy and coast to the finish. Fook Yu Nakajima won his 1st of the season with the rookie Foo King Last claiming 2nd and Lucius Cameldung completing the podium.

Race 5 =  France (Magny Cours)

As if planned, the sun was shining on the track at Magny Cours with no sign of any clouds. Skarr Lectric took pole for the 1st time this season. A slow start saw Hertz van rental stall on the grid. As the field started moving, both of the BR racing teams cars took body work damage. The 1st corner saw Margot l'escargo take the lead, and Nuk E Brown saw the loss of tyres as he slid through the corner. Margot l'escargo then saw a puff of smoke from his engine as he pushed his lead. The track is renowned for being hard on engine wear, with the following engines puffing smoke in the long straight, Gerhard Cheeseburger’s, Michael Cobblers and Hugh Bends.

Team Kamikaze were making moves all over the field, with Fook Yu Nakajima weaving through traffic to gain a place. Nuk E Brown in fighting off the challenge from Nakajima managed to damage his engine. The 3rd corner saw more carnage as drivers lost both tyres and fuel as gears were crunched to make the corner. Hertz Van rental took advantage of this and gained a massive 7 places. Skarr Lectric and Nuk E Brown were competing hard for the lead with the pack jostling for positions.

Due to this jostling more bodywork was left on the road. The 1st corner on the 2nd lap saw lots more close encounters as the field closed up. Skarr Lectric managed to gain a lead and stretch it with no one closing up on him. Hertz Van Rental in his push for a podium place managed to lose control and spin out at the 3rd corner. The long stretch also saw the 1st retirement of the race as Nuk E Brown’s engine finally gave up in a cloud of smoke. Gerhard Cheeseburger and Michael Cobblers also suffered further engine wear down the stretch. Due to Fook Yu Nakajima pushing hard the rest of the field had to speed up. This led to the end of Cobblers race as his engine finally giving in.

The 3rd corner saw the last fight for places with more close shaves with no damage, though it did see Hertz Van Rental spin for the 2nd time. Nakajima and Cameldung pushed each other to a close wheel to wheel finish. Skarr Lectric won the race easily from the rookie Foo King Last and Gerhard Cheeseburger gaining the last podium place.
