Inspired by the man in the title, Biggles Flies North is based on several commercial and home grown sets of rules.

Set over the lines on the Western Front, from the early days of the Fokker scourge to the last days of the war, each player randomly selects an Allied or Central Pact aeroplane and tries to complete his mission, bombing, spotting, trench strafing or just trying to stop the opposition from succeeding.

Every plane has a list of restrictions that must be adhered to, from its stall speed, to the rate of climb, turn radius and maximum altitude. If a specific plane has something that makes it stand out from the rest of the crowd, the characteristic is enhanced to add to the enjoyment of the game. In Biggles, Sopwith Camels turn on a sixpence, Spads and SE5a’s speed across the board, whilst the Nieuports and Albatross’s risk losing their wngs in prolonged dives.

Points are scored for hitting the opposition, completing the days mission, and the victories tallied. Experienced pilots receive bonuses to hit, repair damage and recover from those mistakes that happen in close combat. Aces can pick specific targets on an aircraft, speeding its destruction.
